In October of 2020 we had the pleasure of shooting a music video for a rap artist from Detroit. We thought the song was cool, so we agreed to shoot the video on short notice. The name of the artist is Str8Kash RJ and the name of the song is All My Life, a play on the old school hit “Freaks Come Out at Night” by Whodini. Check out the music video below.

Music Video Production: Overview

How We Made It Happen

We shot the video using a varying set of gear which we’ve outlined below.

  • Camera: Canon EOS C300 Mark III
  • Stabilizer: Zhiyun Crane 3S
  • Lens: Cinema prime CN-E24mm T1.5 L F
  • Lens: Cinema prime CN-E50mm T1.3 L F
  • Lens: COMPACT-SERVO 18-80mm T4.4
  • Drone: DJI Phantom 3 Pro
  • Various Supporting Gear
  • Crew Members: 2

We shot the video in 4K resolution and used numerous tools to ensure smooth and stable footage. VizFact edited the video with the assistance of Daniel Schmidt. Some of the main focuses of the project was using natural light was much as possible, set integrity, a clean edit, and a clean feel.

I’d say we did pretty good!

Regrets

The only regret is not capturing enough B-Roll, but hey, the artist sent us the wrong song for preparation and we were hired on short notice. So, I guess ya can’t win’em all, but we’re happy with the final production and so is the artist that hired us for the project.

Another regret is not getting the shot across the river in focus in the opening footage. We didn’t know it wasn’t in perfect focus until we had the project in post-production. We were mainly focused on getting the artist in focus. With cinema lenses, there’s no auto focus. We’ve implemented measures to prevent such an honest oversight from happening again in the future.

The Process

  • The artist called us inquiring about producing a music video on short notice.
  • We agreed on a budget.
  • We visited the location to get photos of the location and a feel for the set.
  • We developed a shot plan with shot lists.
  • We determined the best gear to use for the shoot.
  • We shot the video over the course of 1 day and 1 evening.
  • VizFact edited the video.
